David Tao came clean and admitted cheating on his wife at a press conference yesterday.
The 45-year-old Taiwanese singer-songwriter was exposed by his former girlfriend, Yang Ziqing of their affair, and their WeChat love messages were published on the Internet as well.
David first apologised to his wife Penny, parents-in-law, mother and his fans at the press conference. In his statement, he said that he knew Yang in 2010 and they had dated before his marriage.
After his marriage, they occasionally kept in touch via text messages. The only time they met was in Chengdu on 19 June.
He said, “This meeting was the cause of my infidelity, I won’t escape it, and no matter how things happened, I made a mistake. For this matter, I am very sorry and feel ashamed.”
David also broke down in tears when spoke on his family, “They know everything. I know they are extremely angry and don’t believe it. They are very sad and disappointed with me, but they chose to forgive me eventually. Penny, thank you for forgiving me. My parents-in-law, I have disgraced you. Mum I have disappointed you. Thank you for not leaving me and for loving me.”
When asked when he had started dated Yang, he said he did not record it. He was also not sure about her exact age.
David said that his wife had forgiven him, and divorce was not in the cards.
“We did not speak on this [divorce]. I said it just now, Penny has forgiven me. I only wish to spend more time on her to love her more, and be good to her. I only hope that my reputation will not be further damaged although it is already affected. I don’t want to escape it. I want to be honest with everyone.”
Asked if he had regretted knowing Yang, David said, “I don’t regret meeting her. When we met, I really thought that she was a kind-hearted girl. As for my wife, I will only love this woman in this life.”
