TVB has announced that it will re-air its classic drama, The Greed of Man <大時代> next Monday (20 April).

This 1992 series centers around the theme of Hong Kong stock exchange, and features veteran actor Adam Cheng. In the drama, Ting Hai played by Adam Cheng made his money by selling short derivatives and stocks. The drama is so well remembered because when the drama was first aired in 1992, the Hong Kong stock market fell by 1200 points in a month.

It subsequently evolves like a curse. Whenever Adam’s dramas or movies would air, the Hang Seng index tends to fall. Now that TVB is going to re-air The Greed of Man soon, many netizens are panicking if the “Ting Hai effect” will crash the stock market again.

TVB Deputy Director of Corporate Communications, Tsang Sing Ming said that the decision to air the classic drama was to coincide with the recent stock market boom, as the stock market topic is close to heart to the audience.

Tsang also said that the variety programme, Sunday Song Bird Sunday <靚聲王> hosted by Adam has been broadcasting for some time, and the stock market continues to boom.

Adam also responded, “[Stock market will] boom! The curse is broken. There won’t be any Ting Hai effect anymore.”

The Ting Hai effect is a hot topic among netizens recently. Many have called to sell away their stocks before the drama starts to air on Monday.
