Veteran MediaCorp actor, Huang Wenyong has passed away from lymphoma cancer today. He was 60.
According to Xinmsn, Wenyong had been seeking treatment at the hospital for the last few months and checked into the Singapore General Hospital a week ago. His family was by his side when he passed away.
The public was alarmed when a visibly thin and frail Wenyong appeared at the “30th Drama Anniversary Show” which was aired on Channel 8 in November last year. He later clarified that he was down with a stomach flu and indigestion which was due to long working hours and irregular meals. He has drastically lost 7 kg then.
Just last month, Wenyong assured his fans through an online portal, Toggle that he was fine. Although he did not specify what illness he had contracted, he said that he was recovering and thanked his fans for their concern.
MediaCorp has released a statement and mourned the passing of one of its most beloved and endearing actors. Wenyong’s acting career started off when he joined the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) in 1980 and was one of the pioneers in the Singapore’s Chinese dramas scene.
Wenyong was most remembered for his Ah Shui role in The Awakening <霧鎖南洋> in which he played love interest to Xiang Yun’s role. Wenyong also brought laughter to his fans, portraying a wacky and stingy taxi-driver in Don’t Worry Be Happy <敢敢做个开心人>.That role also won him the Best Comedy Performer in Star Awards 2000.
He was last seen in the Chinese New Year drama, It’s a Wonderful Life <好运到> in January this year, starring opposite Chen Liping in the drama.
“Wenyong will be dearly missed by everyone in MediaCorp – as a professional craftsman, a beloved colleague and a true friend,” said MediaCorp in its statement.
