Anthony Chen’s Ilo Ilo <爸媽不在家> wins big and bags four trophies at the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei. Besides nabbing the Best Supporting Actress for Yeo Yann Yann, Anthony also bagged the Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Finally, the Singaporean film went on to clinch the biggest accolade of the evening, Best Feature Film, beating the hot favourite of Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster <一代宗師>.
At the post-award reception, Anthony shared with the Oscars Best Director winner, Ang Lee who was also the Chairman of the Awards jury, that he had used three years to produce Ilo Ilo. Even his apartment rental in London was paid by his wife.
Anthony’s plight seems to strike a chord with Ang Lee whose wife also had provided for the family herself to fulfill his film-making dream. However, the difference is Anthony received his first Golden Horse Award at the age of 29, whereas Ang Lee only made his first film at 36.
When Anthony’s wife expressed that Ang Lee’s wife was a role model to her, the Life of Pi director joked and said, “You are luckier than my wife. I don’t pity you!”
Ang Lee later on revealed that Ilo Ilo was not his first pick but Tsai Ming-liang’s Stray Dogs <郊遊> needed much efforts to convince the jury. After deliberating the winner for two hours and four rounds of voting, Ilo Ilo eventually beat the Stray Dogs just by one vote.
Ang Lee also did not forget to give some advice to the 29-year-old Singaporean director. He reminded Anthony, “You started off so high, it will be harder from now onwards.”
