After failing to win the Best Actress award at the 51st Golden Horse Awards, Gong Li has expressed her unhappiness, calling the awards ceremony “unprofessional and unfair”.

Last Saturday, the 48-year-old Chinese actress was shocked by her loss to Taiwanese actress Chen Shiang-chyi and reportedly was missing from the official post-awards party. The sponsor, Piaget reportedly had to cancel a celebration planned in expectation of her win.

Before her departure, Gong Li was full of smiles facing the reporters. A day later, her manager Zeng Jingchao issued a press statement, criticizing the Golden Horse Awards.

“I am very grateful to Golden Horse Awards for giving me the opportunity to see what an unprofessional film festival is like. An unfair film festival will be looked down upon by all the artistes.”

The statement also said that Gong Li likes Taiwan and hopes to visit the place again, but will not take part in the Golden Horse again. The statement also read, “This will be my first and last time attending Golden Horse.”

Zeng said that Gong Li’s remarks was not referring to the results of the Best Actress, but was expressing her thoughts about her whole experience of attending the Awards.

After the Best Actress result was announced, Gong Li’s fans have been blasting on Joan Chen’s Weibo, saying that she was “unfair” and “bear grudges”. Joan, who heads the Golden Horse jury, is rumoured to be at odds with Gong Li.

On the rumours, Joan angrily responded on her Weibo, “Why is it so ridiculous to spread such rumours? I have no obligation to explain, but I will clarify the matter. I have always admired Gong Li’s acting and think that her role in Coming Home, although it is difficult to play, she was so precise that it moved people. I cast all my three votes to Gong Li!”

The executive commitment of the Golden Horse Awards also issued a statement in response to Gong Li’s criticisms.

“The judging process and the results of the Golden Horse Awards has always been fair and independent. It is not affected by any external factors.”
