Singaporean singer Stefanie Sun has written an essay in Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s book, My Lifelong Challenge: Singapore’s Bilingual Journey. In the book, Stefanie recalled her difficulty in conversing Mandarin when she first went to Taiwan.

During a recording of a variety programme, Taiwanese host Jacky Wu scolded her “stupid” when she could not answer his questions. Since then, Stefanie has been motivated to brush up her Mandarin. Since the reports surfaced, many netizens have also blasted Jacky for “bullying newcomers”.

Recently, Jackie clarified the episode on his Facebook. He said that he re-watched the episode which Stefanie mentioned.

“I watched the scene which Stefanie appeared years ago in the variety programme. I really did not think that her Mandarin was bad. The teasing was just to create effects for the show. I love Stefanie Sun and love her radiant smile!”

Jacky explained that he often poked fun of celebrities who appeared in his shows in order to create an impact to the audience. He is often being teased for his height too.

He added, “The speaker is unintentional, but the listener minds it. I will see it as an occupational hazard.”
