Kevin Cheng’s mainland drama, Hero <英雄> has landed a top spot at the Taiwanese TV ratings despite airing for only three days at the prime spot on CTS. Hero has since surpassed the Taiwanese ratings of another successful mainland period drama, The Legend of Zhen Huan <甄嬛传>.
Hero featured the renowned story of how King Fuchai of State Wu (played by Kevin Cheng) defeated King Goujian of Yue (played by Michael Tse) in the Spring and Autumn Period. King Fuchai’s obsession with a Yue beauty, Xi Shi gradually led to the weakening of his state. King Goujian then took advantage of his weakness and sought revenge to regain his empire.
Many viewers praise Kevin for portraying a charismatic and charming King Fuchai who had won the hearts of two beauties, Xi Shi and Zheng Dan. Kevin also delivers a delicate performance and shows two distinctive characters of the historical figure. On one hand, King Fuchai is domineering and aggressive on the battle fields. On another side, he shows his gentleness and kindness towards his love ones.
Many netizens have also expressed that the King Fuchai’s role is specially tailored for Kevin. One netizen said, “Kevin delivers a deep and precise performance. He perfectly expresses that King Fuchai was a successful king and yet at the same time, he was also a self-destructive king.”
