Jaws were dropped when Dayo Wong was announced as the Best Actor award at the 2013 TVB Anniversary Awards last night.
Chilam Cheung was seen as a hot favourite to clinch the Best Actor award due to his immerse popularity starring as the dashing Captain Cool in Triumph in the Skies 2.
However, during the announcement of the Best Actor award, comedian actor Dayo beat Chilam to clinch the award instead.
Although Chilam eventually bagged the Most Popular Male Character award, he seemed disappointed during his acceptance speech. Most Popular Male Character award was widely seen as a consolation prize to the TV King loss.
Receiving his trophy on stage, Chilam said, “Does TVB dislike me? Why is it that I can only win the award through the popular votes? Biological children are cute, but loyal children are important for appearing at the right time.”
Chilam also left immediately after accepting the interview from The Scoop <東張西望>. He did not stay behind to accept any further interviews from TVB official publication and the rest of the media. Chilam later clarified that nobody had informed him to stay behind for the interviews. He left after the awards ceremony because there were fans waiting for him in rain outside the TVB City.
Netizens have criticised Chilam for his “petty speech” on stage. One netizen wrote, “It’s good enough to win the Most Popular award. Your speech is so petty! You can’t act, that’s why you lost the award.”
Chilam’s good friend, Christine Ng defended him on the Weibo, “I don’t think that he’s petty. Mr. Cheung is definitely a humourous, gracious, and loyal artiste.”
When asked about Chilam’s statement on “TVB dislike me”, the newly crowned TV Queen Kristin Tin replied, “It’s important to be well-liked by audience!”
Meanwhile, Chilam has purchased for his wife, Anita Yuen a diamond bracelet after losing the TV King award. He has earlier bet with his wife to get her a diamond if he lost the award.
Anita also encouraged Chilam on her Weibo, “You are very handsome tonight! An actor needs the audience’s likes and admiration. Thankful!”
